Timber Needs More Than a Coat of Stain

Timber is one of the most rewarding surfaces to work with, and one of the easiest to get wrong. Slapping stain over dirty, grey, or unprepared timber doesn’t protect it. It seals in the damage and gives the new coat something to fail with.
Good timber treatment starts with prep. Cleaning back the grey, sanding the surface, opening the grain so the oil or stain can actually penetrate. Done properly, a timber treatment job protects the wood for years. Done poorly, it peels within a season and leaves the timber worse off than before.

What Timber Surfaces Do We Treat?

  • Decks Decks take more punishment than almost any other timber surface — sun, rain, foot traffic, and furniture. We clean, sand, and treat deck boards using oils or stains suited to the species and exposure. A properly treated deck looks better and lasts significantly longer.
  • Pergolas Pergola timbers are exposed to UV and weather from every angle. We assess the condition, prepare the surface, and apply a product that penetrates rather than just sitting on top.
  • Fences and Gates Timber fences grey off and dry out without regular treatment. We stain or oil fences to match the overall property scheme and protect the timber from cracking and splitting.
  • External Doors Timber front doors and external joinery need the right product, one that flexes with the timber as it expands and contracts rather than cracking and lifting. We treat external doors with care, paying attention to edges and end grain where moisture gets in.
  • Timber Trims and Fascias External timber trims, fascias, and eaves are often the first thing to fail on an exterior paint job. Where timber treatment rather than paint is the right approach, we handle it as part of a broader exterior scope or as a standalone job.
  • Screens and Battens Decorative timber screens, privacy battens, and cladding features — stained or oiled to enhance the natural grain while protecting the surface from the elements.

Stain, Oil, or Sealer — What’s the Difference?

  • Penetrating oils soak into the timber grain and nourish the wood from within. They don’t form a surface film, so they don’t peel, they just wear back gradually and need recoating every one to three years depending on exposure. Best for decks and heavily weathered timber.
  • Stains add colour while still allowing the grain to show through. They can be penetrating or semi-film forming. Good for fences, pergolas, and surfaces where a consistent colour is the goal.
  • Sealers form a protective film over the surface. More durable in high-traffic areas but more prone to peeling if the prep isn’t right or the timber moves significantly. We’ll recommend the right product for your surface, species, and how much sun and weather it gets.

How Does a Timber Treatment Job Run?

  1. Inspection and quote We assess the timber — species, current condition, how weathered or grey it is, and what product will suit it. Some timber needs more prep work than others. We’ll tell you upfront what’s involved.
  2. Preparation This is the step that determines how long the job lasts. We don’t skip it.
  3. Application We apply the stain, oil, or sealer using the right method for the product and the surface — brush, roller, or pad. Number of coats depends on the product and the condition of the timber going in.
  4. Drying and cure time We give you a clear guide on drying and cure times before we leave — when you can walk on the deck, move furniture back, and when the surface is fully cured.

How Often Does Timber Need to Be Retreated?

It depends on the product, the timber species, and how much sun and weather the surface gets. As a rough guide:

  • Penetrating oils on a deck in full sun: every one to two years
  • Stains on a pergola or fence with partial shade: every two to three years
  • Film-forming sealers: every three to five years, but prep is more involved when it’s time to recoat

We’ll give you an honest recommendation based on what your timber actually needs, not a schedule that suits us.

Timber Painting FAQs

Find answers to some of the most common questions we receive from homeowners, businesses, and property managers across Sydney.

Yes. Greying is oxidation — it means the surface layer has broken down but the timber underneath is often still sound. We clean back the grey and prepare the surface before treating. The result is significantly better than treating over weathered timber without prep.

Going darker is straightforward. Going lighter or back to a natural tone usually means stripping the existing stain first, which adds prep time. We’ll advise what’s achievable when we inspect the surface.

Most penetrating oils are dry to touch within a few hours and ready for light foot traffic within 24 hours. Full cure is typically 48 to 72 hours. We’ll give you specific guidance based on the product we use.

Yes. New timber often needs a wash and light sand to remove mill glaze before it’ll accept a stain or oil properly. Old weathered timber needs more intensive prep to clean back the grey and open the grain. We assess each job on its own merits.

It depends on the timber and what has already been applied. Conditions also matter – is it under cover or out in the open?
